To communicate directly with the gods is a unique,
ineffable
experience for the ordinary person. Such an experience usually
can
only be met with, it cannot be actively sought. The special feature
of
Cheng-chung shu-hua she (The Society for Calligraphy and Painting
of
the Orthodox School) is that here one can converse directly with
the
gods and receive their direction, instruction and solace.
This is achieved through the interpretation of paintings and their
written commentaries in Tien-yu"celestial language",
produced by the
gods through the services of a human medium. This method is unique
in
Taiwan. |
The simple and austere rooms of the
Society are located on the second
floor of No. 10, lane 21,alley 283, 3rd section, Roosevelt Road.
Above
the centre of the altar hangs a calligraphic rende-ring by the
Chi-fo
(Buddha Chi) of the character ching, "stillness". Below
it is written:
"In stillness one penetrates the mystery of Heaven and Earth,
stillness and piety embody that which is marvelous within man"
and
"Written by Tien" ("Tien" being the name by
which the Buddha Chi
refers to himself when present at the altar). The verse couplets
to
both side of this calligraphy run as follows: "Reaching to
the mind of
Heaven above, penetrating human intentions below." In front
of the
calligraphy there is placed a large offering table, in front of
which
in turn there stands a long rectagonal table on which the medium
paints the pictures. Again in front of that we find a continuously
lighted bowl-shaped "ocean lamp" (Hai-teng) and an incense
burner.
Visitors to the sacred hall on entering usually first pay their
respects to the gods. For this there is no prescribed rite, any
observance is acceptable as long as it expresses a respectful
intention.
